Introducing Lazio

Being home to a city as splendid as Rome, it’s inevitable that the surrounding region, Lazio, ends up being eclipsed. More’s the pity, because this region, once the homeland of the ancient Latins, has a huge amount to offer.

The North of modern Lazio historically belonged to the Etruscans, the most mysterious of ancient peoples. Their colourful painted tombs in Tarquinia are among the most interesting archaeological sites in Lazio and perhaps the whole of Italy. Former Etruscan settlements like Viterbo are today gentle, affluent towns having much in common with Tuscan life.

The southern half of Lazio begins to blend into Campania, with the cuisine and life of towns like Gaeta starting to feel unmistakably Neapolitan. And just south of the Eternity City, the gracious villas, gardens and towns of the Castelli Romani crowd around volcanic lakes, providing refreshing retreats from Roman summers. The popes retreat to Castelgandolfo while other well-heeled Romans take to beautiful Frascati, Ariccia and Nemi.

Land reclamation of the marshy Agro Pontino, just south of Rome, was followed by the construction of early 20th Century towns along Rationalist lines. These towns are unusual but nonetheless interesting for photographers seeking architecture of clean lines and curves, and endless play between light and shadow on these iconic facades.

As the most tantalising city in Lazio, Italy and perhaps the whole of Europe, my photograph collections of Rome have been given a separate section which can be accessed here
