Introducing Umbria

Umbria is a green, landlocked territory with low-key pleasures and a gentle way of life. Its cities are small in size but big in treasures. Graced with intact Etruscan walls, medieval architecture and artworks by Perugino and Pinturicchio, Umbria’s capital Perugia consistently exceeds the expectations of its comparatively scarce visitors.

Umbria is a land of saints; the most famous unquestionably being Francis, whose hometown of Assisi remains a today a major pilgrimage destination and the depository of extraordinary art by Giotto and Cimabue. Saint Rita, Saint Claire, Saint Benedict and many other Umbrian saints can also find worthy tributes in churches and monuments up and down the region, especially in the art-rich towns of Spello, Spoleto, Todi and Montefalco.

For nature lovers, Umbria is a true feast. Summertime brings a plethora of flowers, including lavender, sunflowers and poppies in the central ‘Valle Umbra’. More committed nature photographers flock to the high-altitude towns of Norcia and Castelluccio to capture the spectacle of wildflowers every year. Though the towns themselves are still recovering from a devastating earthquake in 2016, the endless carpets of red, yellow, blue and white flowers continue to delight.

My collection of photographs includes a detailed record of art and architecture in the towns of the Valle Umbra. I also have photographs of pre-earthquake Norcia and Castelluccio, including the annual fioritura in July 2016.
